Some thoughts on the daily routing of a sysadmin
Declutter Mode
Caught-up Modeis for when you've gotten through the DeClutter mode
- Check your monitoring system - 5 minutes most days; longer if there is an issue
- Resolve any outstanding systemdown or perf issues
- Emergency Ticket Check - 5 minutes most days; longer if there is a hot issue
- Work the hot ones NOW!
- You'll do lower priority ones later
- Emergency Email Check - 5 minutes most days; longer if there is a hot issue
- Work the hot ones NOW!
- You'll do lower priority ones later
- Server room walk-through
- Calendar Check (meetings, etc) - 5 minutes
- News Check. 15-20 minutes
- Tickets Catchup. 1 hour.
- Email Catchup. 1 hour.
- Systems checks. 30 minutes

- Project Work or meetings till lunch
- LUNCH
- Monitoring systems check - 5 minutes
- Email/tickets check and catchup. No more than an hour.
- Project work - 2 hours
- Final tickets/email check.
- Clear desk and prepare for tomorrow - 30 minutes
- File everything neatly
- Avoid paper files when possible! Use a scanner.
- Check Monitoring system - 5 minutes
