- Press the POWER button. The Rino beeps and goes to the radio page.
- Be sure the radio is set to channel 7, code 7.
- Go outside and wait for the Rino to lock on to GPS satellites; you'll know this has happened when the display says '2d Accuracy' or '3d Accuracy'. The Rino will hunt for about 5 minutes; if it goes to 'poor GPS reception' a menu will pop up. Choose 'Restart Search' if this happens. Or just turn the radio off and then back on.

- Press the CALL button. It is the little button above the large TALK button. If I am in range, this will let me know your radio is on and you are looking for me. It will also mark your radio on my GPS chart so I can find you. If I am in range, I will answer.
- If I am not in range, try again every 5 minutes for an hour; then start trying every 30 minutes on the hour and on the half hour between the hours of 6 AM and 10 PM. Example: 6 AM, 6:30 AM, 7 AM, and so on. If you need to conserve batteries, turn the radio off between tries.
- If you don't have a watch, there is a time display at the bottom of the main menu screen. Press the PAGE button repeatedly until the main menu appears.
- If you go to sleep, leave the radio turned ON, and put it outside. I may still be able to find it by using the polling feature. Don't do this unless you have more batteries!
