Need a laser printer for the house. I'd like it to be a laserprinter with wireless onboard (or via an onborad module). Color would be a bonus, if toner isn't a huge cost. (As it is on the Samsung CL510 - filling that machine with toner is over $500!)
It needs to fit in less that about 15" wide or deep.
That rules out the 2200 series (which with the 280 jetdirect module would otherwise be fine)
HP 280m is a wireless print server fits in the LIO slot of 1100, 1200, 1300 series printers. ($65)
HP Jetdirect External USB Compatibility for 175x, en3700, en1700, ew2400 (ew2400, about $200, is the only wireless one)
Printers with EIO slot can take the Jetdirect 680N card which will cost in excess of $300
LaserJet 4000 15.4w 16.8d 16h - EIO cards
LaserJet 1150/1300 16.5w 19.5d 10h - LIO on 1300, parallel on 1150
LaserJet 1100 14.5w 14.8d 12.9h (paper tray probably sticks up higher when full) - NO LIO/EIO
LaserJet 2300: 16.2w 17.7d 10.2h EIO.
LaserJet 2200: 16w 17.1d 10h EIO
LaserJet 2100 15.9w 16.5d 9h EIO
Laserjet 1160/1320 16.8w 13.9d 10d - RIGHT DIMENSIONS available as 1320nw (wireless) or can use ew2400 or 380x (380x in the 1320 only) outboard print servers. Toner cartridges go for $30, shipped
Laserjet 2420 16.7w 15.7d 10.2h EIO slot.
Brother HL-5280DW street price around $350. Wireless, BW duplex printing. Right dimensions. 7500page toner cartridges @ $38 shipped.
Brother HL-4070CDW street price around $390 (Amazon) is a color duplex wireless printer. A little too large at 16.5w 18.7d by 12.5h High yield color cartridges (need 3) go for about $110 each; the high yield black is about $80. Normal-yield color cartridges will be $50-$80 each. New unit comes with all cartridges (low yield ones). It's supported on Windows 2000 --> Vista. I'd have to find someplace to put it, and protect from dust if on 1st floor.
I don't know about printers, so i can't tell about it sorry.
