Here is our home emergency kit.

Simple, basic stuff, since we have plenty of goodies in our BugOutBag as well.

  1. 5 gallon bucket to store it all, and act as toilet receptacle if water outage. About $7.
  2. Toilet seat/lid for bucket. About $10.
  3. WAG bags (4). Inside the bag is some 'Pooh Powder' which turns human waste into a gel and kills odor. Also some toilet paper and a hand sanitzer napkin. About $4 each.
  4. 7.5 gallons of water (figure at least 1 gallon of water per person per day). Get these at local grocery store; I paid $3.50 each. Replace (yearly) on 9/21/2008
  5. Qty 6, Meals, ready to eat (MRE). About $75 for a case of 12. No expiration date! No expiration date! Really! Also see RepackingMRE (to save space).
  6. Emergency candles. Dunno where I got these; Amazon has a different style of 9-hour candle. $2.75 for 3 candles (get at least 6).
  7. Trash bags (in case outage lasts long time, can use instead of WAG bags). From your grocery store.
  8. Original scent Pine sol (not shown) is what you use to cut down odor if you just use 'bag in a bucket' instead of the WAG bags. I lived in Eskimo villages, where we did 'bag in a bucket' (we called them honeybuckets), and learned that it's really wise to double bag! Beware: in most places, it's illegal to throw human waste out with the normal trash. But if the outage lasts that long, you probably won't be the only one doing it ... a more costly way to go, that won't bathe trashmen in crap, is to get some Pooh Powder of your own. About $70
  9. Roll of toilet paper (not shown)
  10. Wet naps (not shown). About $6
